ENVR 3003 Urban Water Systems (2-2)3 - Orhan Uslu
Principles of design for water supply and distribution systems, sewage collection and sewer design, sewer construction and maintenance characteristics of sewage, sewage disposal, miscellaneous wastewater treatment techniques, storm water collection systems, financial considerations.

ENVR 3004 Wastewater Treatment (2-2)3 – Orhan Uslu
Protecting water quality with an emphasis on fundamental principles, wastewater quantity, wastewater characterization, effluent and discharge standards, philosophy of design, theory and conceptual design of systems for treating municipal wastewater. Reactor theory, process kinetics, and models. Physical, chemical, and biological processes. Sludge processing. Natural processes for wastewater treatment. Reuse and recycling of wastewaters.

2. Political Science and International Relations

Turkey and Security Challenges in the 21st Century (3) – Ebru Canan-Sokullu  Download as PDF

This course introduces students to the contemporary foreign and security policy agenda of Turkey. Participants will reflect upon the new regional and global security order within a multi-dimensional framework, addressing relations with the US, EU, Middle East, Caucasus and Central Asia. This course is suitable for students across the social sciences and requires little previous knowledge of Turkey and the region.

European History (3) – Brigitte Jelen  Download as PDF

This course offers a historical overview of European thought, politics and culture from the French Revolution (included) until Today. This is the second part of a two-semester course on European History and will begin with the French Revolution and its impact on Europe and the World. We will then focus on the Industrial Revolution, the rise of Nationalism and Imperialism, all main characteristics of nineteenth century Europe. With the twentieth century we will inevitably turn towards an analysis of Europe at War: First and Second World Wars but also Cold War and decolonization movements. Our class will end will a discussion of contemporary realities such as ethnic and religious diversity, international migrations, and the impact of globalization on the everyday lives of Europeans. This course will provide students will a strong historical foundation that will help them understand current debates taking place within Europe today (especially regarding issues such as national identity, secularism and globalization) as well as the position of Turkey in relation to the European Union.

Bahçeşehir University will be collaborating with the University of California at Davis in organizing this summer program in History. This summer school will focus on Middle Eastern history from the foundation of the Ottoman Empire on the borderlands of Byzantine Anatolia through its expansion into Europe, Asia, and Africa, creating a new cultural synthesis including the Arab, Greek, Islamic, Mongol, Persian, Slavic, and Turkish traditions.

Learn Turkish in İstanbul (6) – Burcu Alarsan  Download as PDF

The written part of the course covers basic Turkish grammar, fundamentals of phonology and simple sentence structures. In the spoken part of the course, students will learn how to use Turkish in common situations, such as greetings, asking for and giving information, and conducting telephone conversations. Language games and other learning activities are also used to reinforce learning and encourage participation. 20 hours of instruction per week include 8 hours of grammar and 12 hours of reading, writing, speaking.

Mobile devices are quickly replacing other technologies in many professions, and bringing the advantages of desktop and laptop computers to researchers and instructors in support of learning. Mobile devices can be indispensable tools for teachers, enabling them to walk around, monitor, and track student behavior where the actions in question take place, and to access student information and organize the details of teaching in one small, portable device that can be used anywhere and at any time. Un-tapping this ubiquitous technology creates a wide array of educational opportunities.

The course is designed to give students a broad overview of learning on mobile devices and allow them to interact with research and design for effective and innovative mobile learning environments. The students will learn how to use mobile device in new and enhanced ways and the factors to maximize mobile learning.

This course will be for master’s level students who have experienced learning and instructional theories and strategies in their settings

Urbanization (3) – Brigitte Jelen  Download as PDF

This class explores major themes in urban sociology and urban theory from their inception at the beginning of the 20th century until today. We will read foundational texts by Mumford, Simmel, Park, Lefevbre, de Certeau, Walkowitz, Zukin and others. While our theoretical readings deal with more general questions facing metropolitan cities around the world, our empirical examples and our cultural material (photos, films, music) focus on the city of ISTANBUL. In application of these theoretical readings, students will be asked to do three individual practical observation exercises in different neighborhoods of the city (Being a “flâneur” in Beyoğlu; Slums and Gated communities; Disabled for a day). Thus with this class, international but also local students will get a chance to discover the city of Istanbul in an unfamiliar, off the beaten track fashion, while learning to master the key conceptual tools of urban theory.
