Department of New Media

Introduced as a military technology in 1960s, Internet communication has today enveloped the world. Billions are used to count its users. Knowledge can not remain hidden; knowledge wages war on censorship. Technology and democracy have merged, and melded into one, through blogs, dictionaries, YouTube, Facebook and then Twitter. As a matter of fact, the democracy movement in Northern Africa was ignited by a single tweet. Journalism gave significance to that message, and also public support. So what might have remained a local movement turned international, after it intersected with journalism and the news.

News is changing dramatically, with the rapid introduction of new media devices. The Internet, in particular, is changing the definition of news: how it is gathered and distributed, and how it will continue to change.

But no matter how technology -- print, radio, television and of course the internet -- may change, in the end what remains is the journalism profession. This is the reason journalism has been dubbed the Fourth Estate, after the executive branch, legislature and judiciary.

The revolutionary change in newsgathering, and writing with new media devices, requires a new kind of journalism education. Therefore, Bahcesehir Universitys Journalism Department, without forgetting its past, is marshaling its New Media resources and student-centered approach into a mission of renewal.

The New Media Department offers two projects for its students: both Haber newspaper, which Bahcesehir students and instructors have been publishing for the past five years, and a traditional print journalism practice. Too, BİLET, our news portal, is becoming an important communication platform for students, where they can find news via new media channels.

Furthermore, third-year new media students take up internships outside the university. And with the CO-OP program, a unique university education project, theyll have an opportunity to continue their education, while working in their chosen field.

Bahçeşehir is the only university in Turkey where journalism and new media intersect, via the broad educational acquisition offered by its Communication Faculty. This is why we believe New Media graduates will be very successful, and stand out in the business world.
