Department of Sociology Seminar Series 2008-2009


The department has an active series of seminars that involve talks by visiting academics from different universities. These seminars are open to all students, academics and researchers from other universities.  

Prof. Dr.  Berch Berberoğlu is Chairman of the Sociology Department and Director of Graduate Studies in Sociology at the University of Nevada, Reno, USA. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Oregon in 1977.  He has been teaching and conducting research at the University of Nevada, Reno for the past 30 years.  His areas of specialization include international political economy, globalization, development, political sociology, class analysis, and comparative-historical sociology. Prof. Berberoğlu gave a talk on October 10, 2008 that focused on the process of "Globalization". He highlighted diverse dynamics of globalization, their impact on society in 21st century, and globalization's different aspects, which are economic, social, political / military, ideological, cultural and environmental. In his second talk on "Labor and Capital in the Age of Globalization", he underlined some of the critical issues concerning labor and the labor processes in the age of globalization. He specifically pointed out that such processes and control of labor had historical and spatial dimensions.

Tuna Kuyucu is a PhD candidate at the University of Washington, USA. His research areas include urban poverty and marginalization, informal economies, international migration, law and social control, nationalism and ethnic conflict. His talk at Bahcesehir University, on Novermber 15, 2009 was titled "Social Housing Projects that Look for the 'Social': the Case of Bezirganbahçe". In his talk Kuyucu emphasized the impact of the urban regeneration projects in this Istanbul neighborhoood on local communities' lives.

Finally, Mehmet Çelik is an instructor at Bahcesehir University. In his talk Dr. Çelik highlighted different aspects of the reflections of social changes in Turkey on Turkish novel. He also illuminated students about the main features of key characters in Turkish novels and how these represented major social transformations within Turkey.
