PROF. DR. NILUFER NARLI

Prof. Dr. Nilufer Narli holds a degree in Education with a major in Philosophy and minor in Sociology; and MSc in Humanities with a major in Logic, the Philosophy of Science and Philosophy from Middle Eastern Technical University, Ankara. She holds a PhD in Social Sciences with a major in Political Sociology from the School of Comparative Social Sciences, University Sains Malaysia. Prof. Narli was selected as an  Eisenhower Fellow from Turkey  in 1993.

She is a Full professor of Political Sociology at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Bahcesehir University. She was Vice Rector of the university till September 2006. Currently, she is chairing Sociology Department she founded. Before being appointed as Vice-rector on September 1 2005, she was the founding Dean to the Faculty of Communication at Kadir Has University (October 2003-August 2005). Before that, she had been the founding chair of Sociology Department at Marmara University, where she also chaired the Sociology and Anthropology Department of  the Middle East Studies Institute. She was visiting scholar at Maryland University (in the summer of 2007.

Currently, she has studying the social impact of computer learning on the young people. The computer teaching and learning project is sponsored by Microsoft and UNDP. The Youth for Habitat is the NGP partner.  Narli took part in a research project, "Governance and the Military: Perspectives for Change in Turkey" (2004-2006). The project was coordinated and funded by the Centre for European Security Studies (CESS) in Holland. She directed the project "Political Islam in Turkey", which was funded by the Ford Foundation in 1992.

Narli's topics of research and teaching interest include: Islamist Movements, Migration, Civil-military Relations, Conflict and Development in the Middle East and Media and Conflict.  Narli has experiences in distant learning with CUNY and Shangai TV University of China (2004). Narli has a strong background in cooperation with the EU institutions. She has participated in several conferences on human mobility in the Middle East and the Balkans. She was a trainer in conflict resolution at seminars of the Southeast Europe Leadership Initiatives for Women NGOs in the Balkan countries in 2000 and 2001. She has taken a leading role in the organization of international conferences on regional cooperation in the Middle East too.  Narli has extensive experience in working with the NGOs in Turkey. Moreover, Narli takes part in the social responsibility projects conducted by international companies and prepares evaluation study on the impact of the projects (e.g., UNILEVER-Dove "True Beauty" campaign; and MICROSOFT's computer literacy project).

Her current research topics are "Turkish Cinema and Urbanization," "Illegal Human Mobility in the Balkans," and "The EU Harmonization Reforms, Military and Good Governance in Turkey" and Women's Rights.  Narli published articles in journals such as MERIA and Turkish Studies,as well as in edited volumes. Narli was visiting scholar at Maryland University (July-October 2007) to conduct a research on the US and Turkish civil-military relations. She is currently acting as Advisory Board Member for Perceptions published by Centre for Strategic Research (Ankara) and of the Middle East and Balkan Studies Foundations. 

Narli participated in the Turkish Delegation to Beijing +5 Women 2000: Gender Equality, Development and Peace for the 21st Century (23rd special session of the UN General Assembly in 2000), and is a member of the Turkish Delegation of the UN 50th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women in 2006.

Narli's opinion on Turkish politics has been often consulted by local and international media. She has been interviewed by national and international dailies and TVs to seek opinion on politics in Turkey and in the Middle East.
